Looking into the effulgent Kilauea caldera, we instantly recognize the flaming presence of the dazzling and temperamental Pele.
According to Herb Kawainui Kane, artist, historian, and author, Pele is “one of the most dramatic spirits of the Hawaiian pantheon… Ancient traditions about her reveal an impetuous, lusty nature… at times gentle and loving, but always jealous and unpredictable, capable of sudden fury and great violence.”
Kane further explains, Pele’s “home is the active crater Halemaumau within the Kilauea volcano on the island of Hawai’i. In Hawai’I Pele lives in Hawaiian hearts and minds as the extreme personification of volcanic majesty and power within a cosmos in which all natural forces are regarded as life forces, related by kinship to human life.”
