Dancing under the Laurel

Scroll down to content

Usually on Wednesdays I am running back from Tlacochahuaya at just about the same time the band is wrapping up and the people are no longer dancing under the great laurel opposite the cathedral on the zocalo. However, tonight, once I was in dry clothes, I had the chance to watch the crowd of dancers and the crowd watching them. It is always a treat to see these folks dancing as most are real partners, not performers. The dance together because they love dancing together and their dance is beautiful because of the way they look at each other as they are moving together.

There is one pavo real (peacock), a young man who is probably technically perfect and with whom many women want to dance, but he’s no fun to watch because he too mechanical, too . I prefer to keep my eyes on the people who fit together
