One of the hardest things about being on sabbatical in beautiful Oaxaca has been the long distance from loved ones. I have especially felt the length between here and home during the winter holidays. Last night, checking in with the youngest family members and their parents via FaceTime to wish each one a joyous new year, I didn’t feel quite as far away.

John still likes mean tattoos, ones with skulls or spiders. Lucy and Malia loved their trip to the snow and were excited about the fireworks display they were going to see last night. I said we’d also be seeing fireworks, but I was pretty sure there was no official display planned as I hadn’t seen any castillos (castles, fireworks towers).

As we were ending the calls, I said, “See you on Sunday,” and suddenly I realized how incredibly quickly this incredible adventure is drawing to a close.
