World Cup fever is ubiquitous internationally, but here, in Oaxaca, the games have the power to quite literally stop traffic.

Yesterday, for the game against Croatia, waiters did not appear for their shifts, students and teachers retired early, and taxi drivers were conspicuously absent to those of us waiting in the street and soon packed onto a bus full of people desperate to know the score.
