Enrique Peña Nieto assumed office today, December 1, 2012, and this instigated a new graffiti campaign in the streets of Oaxaca. This top photo depicts a penis. It is a play on words because Peña is close to the word pene (penis). These are just some of the photos I was able to get while waiting to catch a bus this evening. i am sure there are many more near the Zocalo where a protest was taking place this evening.
Atenco no se olvida!!! EPN Asesino.
Atenco will not be forgotten. Enrique Peña Nieto is a murderer.
Without graffiti such as this I often would not have enough information about what people are specifically protesting beyond the man himself. However, the word Atenco helped me to find information about how, as governor, Enrique Peña Nieto permitted the use of force on protestors. This resulted in two deaths, many other cases of poilce brutality, and Peña Nieto’s continued support of force to help subdue a situation involving protestors.
Peña: Oaxaca no te quiere en el poder.
Peña: Oaxaca does not want you in power.
Ni un dia y ya hay tres muertos EPN asesino
Not even one day [in office] and already three are dead; Enrique Peña Nieto is a murderer.
Primer dia como presidente, primer asesinato.
First day as president, first murder.
I have not yet confirmed that there have been deaths today, but there has been a tremendous amount of protesting since the July election, especially on this first day of his presidency.
On a very different note, today in my intercambio I learned that one plays for the presidency if one is a candidate. While talking with Javier and Rafael, two new friends, we discussed the differences between women and men (in broad strokes) between Mexico and the US. Both seemed surprised that a woman could be president of the US until they recalled that Mrs. Clinton (as they said) “played” for the presidency.
