The other day, while making small talk, I asked a man, who’d just told me his favorite past times (pasatiempos) include: singing in a gospel choir and reading the bible, what he does to observe Dias de Los Muertos. He looked at me with a look that read: I just told you I’m a good Christian. Instead, he clarified in words, “My family celebrates back home in the Isthmus.”

And, he quickly turned the focus to me. “And you?” I said that I was on the hunt for things for my altar and asked if he knew where I could buy a Dr. Pepper.

Most of me is open to any magic in the world. Part of me wonders if I could find more if I could be more discerning.
