Ten Pesos, Please

As I was taking a picture of this beautifully constructed catrina (the base is made of a basket) that was in the entry way of a tour company, a man approached me and said, in English: We charge ten pesos for each picture.

Not missing a beat, I said, in Spanish: “I don’t have ten pesos, but I can sell you some bookmarks.” He immediately began to laugh because not only was I speaking Spanish, but I was offering him in a product that many Mexican women approach people with in the streets.

He immediately began to quiz me on my knowledge of the area, and, almost as promptly, he concluded that I have not only seen the landmarks for which his company offers group tours, but I have seen a great deal more. He told me about more expensive private tours to the Sierra Norte and the rates for drivers with or without the expertise of tour guides.

As a calenda for a wedding took over the street and the sidewalks, he quickly scribbled his name on a brochure and sent me on my way.
