When I think of Oaxaca City, I think of abundance. There is a variety of everything here. Benito Juarez Market (Mercado) is so full that it is difficult for one person to maneuver the aisles packed with colorful handmade wares from all over the state. And, 20 de Noviembre Market rivals Benito Juarez, but it is focused on exquisite foods and flavors.

As I passed a tienda de telas y moda (store for fabrics and fashion), I couldn’t help but think of Project Runway, the television series. Mood has got nothing on Mexico. Like most of the mercados, this store was so packed that it was nearly impossible to maneuver, and the inventory spilled out onto the street. I want to see some of the Project Runway contests maneuver this maze and make something of Dia de los Muertos fabrics or, better yet, oil cloth. Leave me to concoct next season’s challenges.
