Today we learned the difference between la capital (the city) and el capital (money), la papa (potato), and el papa (the Pope), el colera (cholera) and la colera (to be very angry), la cura (medicine), el cura (a religious authority in the church), la policia (a police woman or the police station) and el policia (a police man). It is amazing that the change in article can mean the difference between potato and the Pope, especially since we tend not to capitalize much in Spanish. Not even the word “Spanish.”
Our task was to write a composition using all of the words. Here’s how mine turned out:
En la capital hay un policia que tiene una cara como si tuviera cólera, como no hay una cura para su cara fea.
El trabaja en la policia para ganar capital y papas para su familia. Un dia, el le pidio a dios para mejorar su vida, pero dios estaba ocupado y el policia necesitaba hablar con el papa. El papa tambien estaba ocupado y dijo que el necesitaba ir al la iglesia para hablar con el cura. A este le dio la cólera a el, y ahora el es mas feo.
TRANSLATION
In the capital there is a cop who has an ugly face, as if he has had cholera, as if there is no cure for his ugliness.
He works in the police station to gain capital and potatoes for his family. One day, he asked God to improve his life, but God was busy and said the cop needed to speak to the Pope. The Pope also was busy and said he needed to go to the church to talk to the priest.
This made him very angry, and now, with this anger, he’s uglier.
