My teacher describes her husband as feo (ugly) on a regular basis, and we students who have seen or met him defend him, saying things like, “No, he is handsome” or “He’s not that ugly” or “He’s not as ugly some others.”
She laughs as I ask: “Do you get up in the morning and say ‘Buenos dias, feo (good morning, ugly?'” We ask, “Does he know you call him ugly?” Our patient teacher explains that when looking for a husband, many tend to look for the three Fs: Feo (Ugly), Fuerte (Strong), y Formal (Formal). These characteristics mean that a partner will be faithful, helpful, and professional/suitable for parents.
Having an “ugly” partner gives people peace of mind that others will be perhaps less interested in their partner. However, if everyone is looking for someone ugly….
With these pieces of criteria in mind, I rated potential mates in the Zocalo tonight. The specimen pictured here is not a good potential candidate. He is too guano (handsome). He was so handsome, I was listening him talk to two women at the same time.
