Almost anywhere I go in Oaxaca City, I note that there is abundant work available – in tourist spots for people interested in working as waiters, clerks, service people in general. Even more interesting is that discrimination by employers in filling these positions in Mexico is acceptable; specifically, the people soliciting help specifically request applicants of a particular gender. I had seen a sign that seemed to request a male waiter, but I wasn’t sure because sometimes the male gender is used when a gender is not specific or when there are people of both genders. However, this announcement specifically requests a female. It is a place that sells primarily women’s clothing, but it is a bit surprising nonetheless.

I have also heard that many employers also do not hesitate to choose a candidate based on appearance or age. This makes sense as I have seen that most employees in an establishment have a similar look (body type, hairstyle, etc.) as if it is a part of the uniform.
