Next week in the cultural workshops at the Instituto we will begin a two-week segment on Dia de los Muertos. We will learn about some of the traditions and reasons for the traditions. We will also make masks for the comparsa (parade) we will be a part of. I am looking forward to learning more, especially as the city seems to be as eager as I.
I bought a little didactic altar and asked my teacher if I could bring it into my Spanish class for us to assemble and discuss because some of the students aren’t taking any more classes and will miss out on the workshops we will have. It was a three-dimensional diorama that required some tape and some patience for me to construct it. I ended up constructing it alone, and we did not discuss it at all. Instead, we played a game that was a mix between Monopoly and Life – but much less interesting. Grounded on a space for more than half of the game (I had to miss turns until someone landed on my exact spot, and the rest were ahead of me as I was the last player), I normally would be frustrated, but I had this delightful little project to work on. And, I was learning more about the tradition and my own ability to have patience for creating something.
