Last night marked a month here in Oaxaca. Wednesday and Thursday nights I decided not to post to the blog because I didn’t feel I had anything interesting to relate. I was mired in homesickness, so I decided to have a hamburger. After considering (for a half a second) Burger King, I went to one of the street vendors and asked for a hamburger. I was surprised when he began to grill a single slice of processed ham along with the ground beef and onions — and pineapple. The ham was a delicious addition (though I decided to skip the pineapple and cheese).
The next morning I asked Flor about why there is ham on a hamburger, and she said that some automatically make a Hawaiian version of a burger (because people seem to like it), but it would be fine for me to skip the Hawaiian part.
The hamburger (especially the mustard and ketchup) worked wonders. A sort of aromatherapy, the meal made me feel satisfied and ready for the remaining month I have before I return to Sacramento for a brief visit.
