Because we arrived early and the dancers were rehearsing, our guide decided to take us to see the municipality’s presa (dam). A serene area just outside of the town, the dam and lake were visited by two herds of sheep and a variety of cows while we visited. The thick green color of the water made an excellent surface to reflect Teotitlan’s beautiful sky and abundant nubes (clouds).

Riding in the back of a blue truck on the way to the dam, we were impressed by all of the friendly people we passed. Everyone stopped to say buenas tardes. If they knew our guide, they wanted to know who we were, how long we were staying, what we were up to.

There is a palpable silence about Teotitlan and especially about the outskirts where we were. We could hear the baby goats bleating in the distance. Even a single fly sounded like a motorcycle in the quiet around us.
