Last night, Juan Carlos and Fernanda were married in a ceremony in Santo Domingo. Then, they took the celebrating out into the streets.
The couple were led by a dancing man carrying a spinning globe featuring their names, two enormous munecas (dolls) — one a bride, the other a groom — a band, and traditional dancers. They were in the middle of the crowd with family trailing after them on the sidewalks and in the middle of the streets filled with cars.
People peeked out of windows, stood in doorways, shouted blessings from rooftops, and became part of the procession (as I did). What a joyous way to celebrate love.
