Hierve el Agua (The Water Boils)

As we jumped into the back of a covered truck in Mitla, I asked the driver how long the ride would be. He said fifty minutes, and the road would not be smooth. Ever since I first met Oaxaca (more than four years ago), I have wanted to visit Hierve el Agua. Whenever I ask locals where I should go, they say Hierve el Agua.

Known for its natural springs that seem to boil from the rocks and for its petrified waterfalls (cascadas petrificadas), this place cannot be captured in photos or postcards. It is otherworldly. It is a place where the locals spend many hours swimming, sunbathing, and hiking. There are also cabins and places to picnic. A sacred place, Hierve el Agua’s waters are said to have healing potential because of their high mineral content.

If anyone ever asks me what they should see as they visit Oaxaca, I will be sure to suggest Hierve el Agua.
